back to firsts

I'm done with the lasts.... last class, last exam, last time I ever take the bar (hopefully)...

It's time for the firsts... as in, first day of work. Tomorrow I meet the Gang at the brand new office (literally...it's brand new). I'm very excited to get started on this adventure, but I just really, really hope that I'm going to impress everyone with my mad legal skillz, and not be a rusty old let-down. I'm sure it's fine, and I'm sooo over being self-depracating, but law school the bar exam has done a number on my self-confidence. So.

I'm off now to plan my first day of work outfit, and get a good night's rest!

3 good things about my day

today was awesome because....
- i got to cash in on my health insurance! the awesome benefits of being married to an awesome guy who works for a pretty cool company (as cool as owning Lexis Nexis can make you) include getting to be put on his awesome insurance! and now, thanks to my love of filling out online forms, i have been able to get a mental health assessment, check out discounts on gym memberships and even get the number of the doctor who lives literally one block away from me and is accepting new patients! so many of my hypochondriac tendencies are about to be reckoned with...

- we ate in chinatown! just last night i was laying in bed griping about how i feel like we don't do enough fun things in our life, and how its been so much easier to kick back a few drinks than come up with something interesting to do. just last night, T was saying how he wants to explore new places, starting with chinatown. and then this afternoon i had a serious craving for egg drop soup, and we were working so closeby... voila! our plans put into action! we discovered a crazy bizarre 2-floor warehouse-sized shang-hai market full of books on chinese characters, colorful paper lanterns, silk robes, mysterious board games, bird and fish kites and an authentic acupuncture room in the back. there was some street percussion group with two dragons dancing around the street like a stationary parade. then we had a 10-dish dim sum sampler for dinner at a vegetarian restaurant someone recommended to us a few days ago. delish!

- i found myself neck-deep in a labor contract at work! i've never been involved in a labor dispute. where i'm from, unions are fairy tales told by wistful employees in in breakrooms across the state, scary stories passed around by executive types at corporate retreats to keep each other up at night. but today i actually got to read a worker contract and interpret the grievance procedure and figure out whether our client can bring a claim to get his job back! today i was useful AND i learned something. and as if that wasn't enough, i actually managed to learn the whereabouts of two clients who had been evading me for weeks on end. it was productive today. way more productive than i suspect class will be tomorrow.

Digging deeper

Well I was working on a long and thought-out introspective post about my feelings toward radical/progressive politics, and the seemingly inexplicable development in recent years of an anti-intellectual streak in my attitude. But then a wall of bike cops and dozens if not hundreds of crazy party-goers streamed down my block, making noises like a riot, and I got distracted. They're gone now, but as I type there is lightening striking somewhere in the neighborhood, the rain is crashing down HARD and there is a lone siren blurting and bleating in front of my door. Whatever is going on out there, it's not pretty. Of course this is all ten minutes after I kiss T good-bye and wish him a safe walk to a downtown hotel where he is meeting out-of-town friends for a drink at a bar. Thank god for online texting.

Anyway, since I'm not getting back to my shoegazing post anytime soon, I thought I'd at least check in. I'm thinking more about how to use this blog as a way for me to develop thoughts and share about myself and process things that are going on in my life. I feel like I've said one of the same two things over and over for a while: either "I am so lucky" or "Life can really suck sometimes." Sometimes I say both things in the same post, just to mix it up. And that's all I think I really ever express to anyone in real life either. Making an effort to reach out to people feels like swimming upstream in a rapid current. It's exhausting, and it's easy to want to give up.

When I worked at my last job, I only ever interacted with two people: my boss, and my boss's boss (also my boss). I think I purposely chose that job because I was afraid of taking a job somewhere where I would interact with a lot of others, especially peers. I had just left a situation in which my actions had caused a ton of hurt, and I didn't want to make any moves that would lead to the same or similar results. In short, I didn't trust myself. Now, I'm back at a place in life where I have many opportunities to interact with people, but I still find myself holing away, unsure of the proper way to be a good friend.

Where was I going with this? Oh yeah. I want to challenge myself to dig deeper. Whatever that means. So today I went to the coffee shop by my house with a journal and this marriage book that I bought on a whim when marriage was still a long ways from our reality. I wanted to work on writing my vows. Last night, T and I spent a while finally tackling the subject of what we want our ceremony to be like. We got in some arguments, had a few laughs and generally made productive headway. Now I'm trying to think of all the things I want to promise him, and the things I'd want him to promise me. With less than a month to go, the only thing I'm freaking out about is the deadline. Sometimes this date feels like a deadline to have it All Figured Out. I know us well enough to know that we are good problem-solvers and the issues we haven't already tackled or talked about, at least in the hypothetical, are few and far between. Mostly we are on the same page, or are confident in our ability to reconcile our differences. There is one issue that lingers that I doubt we'll have figured out before we marry. And I guess that's the only thing that worries me. Are we supposed to know every single detail of our plan for our future? Of course not. But what ARE we supposed to have worked out? What's okay to play by ear? I just don't know. The one thing I am glad about, though, is that I do absolutely know that I am making the right choice. But that goes back to that whole "I'm so lucky" thing. And I've said that before.

Spanning time

So the internship is going pretty well. Yesterday, my supervising attorney said they'd like for me to stay on in the fall if I'm interested. Today, she and the paralegal were planning for next year's tax clinic when I was leaving. I popped my head into SA's office to say goodbye, and asked if they wanted me in on the planning call tomorrow. "Well, we were thinking that if you're here in the Spring you could help us at the clinic again next year, so... yes." Cool! Not the tax clinic thing, which doesn't thrill me, but the whole sticking around and working for them thing sounds pretty good. Not only do I like working for a legal aid organization, and not only do I like working with farmworkers, but I especially like the idea of having a "workplace". To keep me grounded when school starts up again, you know? To have something other than law school going on in my life, even if it is law-related!

In other news, T's grandma's service is next Friday (a.k.a. my 28th birthday), so our plans to go camping will have to be postponed. On the other hand, it means that my bridal shower will go on this weekend. It is just SO WEIRD to have such a joyous occasion marked by so much family tragedy. I mean, it's surreal. This was supposed to be the summer of wedding planning and romance (or, more realistically, wedding-related stress). Instead, it's been a summer of health issues and loss, with wedding planning somehow getting squeezed in and coloring the background of everything else. And that's okay. It will be a memorable summer, and I think that all the things that have happened are only serving to remind me and T of all the love we have in our lives, and all the things we should not take for granted. Even more than it did a couple of months ago, the thought of having all my friends and family gathered together in celebration really lifts my heart these days. Even if my Tio and T's grandma can't be there, their spirits will certainly be with us on that day.

Good begets treats

I was in the conference room sorting papers -- huh. I was literally pushing papers -- anyway, I was doing this for a while when I decided that I needed to come back to my office for a minute. Can't remember why anymore, even though that was only about 4 minutes ago. Muttering under my breath, I said, "Don't get distracted. Don't get distracted."

So here I am.

And back I go, to paper-pushing.

These days of self-regulating my productivity are intensely damning. Where's my coffee?
